Simon’s Cat in Good Company: Amelia, The Spiral Bookcase (Philadelphia, PA)
October is cat month here at Akashic, as all of us adore those furry felines (well, almost all of us—someone here has allergies). We’re celebrating the release of Simon’s Cat Off to the Vet . . . and Other Cat-astrophes! (available everywhere October 29!) by bringing back our Simon’s Cat in Good Company feature, spotlighting some of our favorite bookstore and library cats from around the world. Check our website throughout in October to be introduced to some new purrfect pals.
(Interested in finding a feline friend of your own? Consider adopting one on October 29th, also known as National Cat Day!)
Today, meet Amelia, the Best Bookstore Cat of 2014 and resident feline at The Spiral Bookcase in Philadelphia! From the store’s staff:
One dark and stormy night, a little cat found her way into The Spiral Bookcase in Philadelphia. She has never left. Amelia, our “lucky cat” — calico, short-tailed maneki-neko — loves to beckon with her paw, and has made a home at Spiral and we can’t imagine the shop without her. She is happy to receive her adoring fans in the shop’s reading room, aka the “Parlor of Peculiarities,” and sometimes a line forms, patrons waiting their turn to dote on her. A top-notch greeter, she helps new customers find their way, winding through legs, and impatiently waiting for a pet or two. Claiming top prize in Quirk Books Best Bookstore Cat of 2014, she looks up to all cat internet sensations, including her current infatuation—Simon’s Cat. Amelia is currently accepting new friends on her Facebook page, “Amelia Cat,” but prefers to meet in person.
