Indie Bookstore Spotlight: WORD (Greenpoint, Brooklyn)

Welcome to Akashic in Good Company, a weekly column highlighting some of the amazingly talented, hard-working, committed people Akashic has had the pleasure of working with over the past fifteen years. Taking a break from the interview format, this week and future weeks will feature virtual tours of some of our favorite indie bookstores, written by members of each bookstore’s staff. As Akashic is Brooklyn-based, we thought it fitting to launch this tour series with WORD Brooklyn!

WORD is an independent bookstore in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. We just turned six years old in March 2013! We’re a community bookstore, so we make sure to carry what our neighborhood is interested in. Right now, that means a mix of new fiction and older favorites, lots of narrative nonfiction, a big range of cookbooks, kids’ books, and stationery.

Our staff have pretty diverse tastes. Some recent favorites on our Staff Picks display: A.G. Porta’s The No World Concerto; Mohsin Hamid’s How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia; Linda Urban’s The Center of Everything; Elena Passarello’s Let Me Clear My Throat; Russ Kick’s The Graphic Canon, Vol. 2.

We host lots of events—usually a couple every week—of all kinds, from costumed kids afternoons to touring authors. There are a lot of great ones coming up in April; a couple we’re particularly excited about are Classics Jeopardy night with Kevin Smokler (April 7); Food Is Life, Life is Food with Lucy Knisley and Beth Griffenhagen (April 25); and Meg Wolitzer in conversation with Jami Attenberg (April 29)!

While we’re not a bookstore with a cat, we do love it when customers bring their dogs by—so much so that we made a Tumblr just for our canine friends: worddogs.tumblr.com. We’ve also got six book groups, a basketball league, a roommate finding board, and lots of opinions about books—stop by any time Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., for any and all of the above!
