In celebration of the forthcoming release of Fearless Vampire Killers: The Bad Brains Photographs, we are offering a limited selection of signed and numbered proofs featuring photographs from the book, some never-before-seen or offered for sale.
The proofs are either 9″ x 11.5″ or 11″ x 11.5″, except for the “Spread” image, which is 9″ x 23.” They are printed duotone (black and gray) or 4-color B&W on 158gsm Matte Art Paper. These are the proofs we made to determine what color process we would use to print Fearless Vampire Killers. There are 8 proofs made of each image at the same size and cropping as they appear in the book itself, set on a white background. Each page has unique printer marks. Each series of 7 photos is numbered 1-of-8. Of the 56, 13 were given to people who worked on the book, and only 43 are being made available to the public.

“This is another photo from CBGB, one of the last on the roll. I like it because you see 3 of the 4 band members all in the shot. Unfortunately I lost the negative strip this was on so we scanned it directly from my proof sheet to be able to use it in the book. We got this one proofed specifically as a test to see how well an image scanned from the proof sheet would reproduce. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.” —GEF
“This is the only time I was able to get a full posed band photo of the Bad Brains. If you have the book you can see the other few images I made of them this minute back stage at CBGB, and you can also tell that this is the best one! They never liked being photographed back then, and these few I got backstage make that quite obvious.” —GEF
“This photo of HR flailing early in the show was made at CBGB and first appeared in my book The Idealist. We proofed this one because of the lighting and detail in his face and hair, we wanted to see how much of it would show in each method tested and how it would compare to how it had printed in the past.” —GEF
“This is a 2-page spread in the book, the photo of Darryl and HR was shot at a club called A7 which was on the corner of Avenue A & 7th Street in New York City. It is cropped from the original, but it exemplifies how small of a space they were playing in.” —GEF
