Ian F. Svenonius Rocks Coachella with The Make-Up
Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock ‘n’ Roll Group author Ian Svenonius and his band The Make-Up performed this past weekend at Coachella 2013. “I haven’t had this much fun at a show since I saw the Make-up perform at Bowery Ballroom back in 1998. Yes, Ian, you are still one of my all-time favorites,” writes Ebony March for Palm Springs Life.
The Make-Up will perform tonight with Gap Dream at the Glass House in Pomona. They will also appear again at Coachella next weekend, April 20th, on the Gobi stage at 7:05 pm; click here for a full weekend two lineup.
Ian Svenonius will also be kicking off his West Coast tour starting tomorrow, April 17th, when he will appear at City Lights in San Francisco. Read comments about The Make-Up’s Coachella performance:
Stereogum: “And while the band plays with a sense of stoicism behind him, Svenonious spends most of his time being held up by the crowd or dishing out dance moves that feel like a demented version of the Twist scene in Pulp Fiction. If I had one arbitrary wish in this life, it would probably be to dance with him.”
LA Times: “Ian Svenonius might’ve offered the finest stage banter heard at Coachella.”
The Onion‘s A.V. Club: “Always outspoken, the anti-authoritarian icon even told the crowd he was glad everyone ‘betrayed all your ethical tenets to be here with us,’ saying that while The Make-Up might not have ‘as many BPMs as you’re used to,’ the group has a valuable message all the same.”
The Press-Enterprise: “The Make-Up is more than just psychedelic garage rock out of Washington, D.C–The Make-Up is an experience . . . The band’s reunion at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is worth catching weekend two.”
